The click track: Practice playing to a click/metronome often, rather always! This is the most important advice.
Drum heads: Replace your drumheads just before the session start, or about 1-2 weeks before the recording, and make sure you’ve broke them in a bit, and tune them precisely before we push the record button. Don’t believe in fairy tales, your drums will only sound good if they are tuned properly. To help you to figure these things out, check out the links below.
Don’t forget, be soft on the cymbals and hihat, and be hard on the kick, toms, and snare. The best sound can be achieved, when the drummer plays his/her kit well balanced.
Cymbals: Clean your cymbals just before, or 1-2 weeks before the session, and make sure that they are in good shape.
Performance: First of all, it’s a good idea to bring a spare snare with you, anything can happen. Try not to over-complicate
what you’re playing. It might be impressive during a live show, but easily can be out of time, and not so good on the record. Make sure that everything is well thought out, don’t try to figure out new things when you’re in the process.
